Compostable EN13432 Approved Adhesives

In recent years there has been a major increase in demand for compostable food packaging, due to the large amounts of plastic contamination in soil and marine environments. In 2010 Scitech developed a compostable water based laminating adhesive which passed the compost tests in accordance with EN13432. From this success we have been developing compostable adhesives and coatings for other applications including heat seal coatings for paper and biofilm application.

Why compostable?

• The UK Plastics Pact states that by 2025, 100% of plastic packaging has to be reusable, recyclable or compostable.

• An environmentally friendly solution to prevent the build-up of currently non-recycled complex filmic laminates in the environment.

• Compostable materials break down into CO2 and nutrients and do not lead to micro plastic pollution.

• Industrial composting creates material which can enrich soil and aid farming activities and can reduce the use of landfill sites.

• Increasing demand from consumers and brand owners to eliminate plastic pollution.

EN13432 Standard

In order to conform to this standard the product must pass four tests; biodegradation, disintegration, ecotoxicity and a heavy metals test.

The standard is a pass or fail test with two different criteria based on industrial or home composting conditions.
